Captain Scott’s the Science of Shark Fishing Blog- As Jon Taffer from bar rescue says it is a science and at Nauti Girl Charters we have cracked the ever changing code. First off we hope to see the shark we intend to catch first. So when it comes up don’t try to hook it with your light tackle rod but let us know if we have not already spotted her first- We say Her because most bigger shark tend to be females to survive and breed and carry on the circle of life. So we have already been chumming strategically and you have been doing your part catching dinner fare bottom fish- Action brings action. Now our guest of honor is here we will use one of set up shark rods that best fits the battle and a chosen bait whether live or dead. Once we hook her up we will have everyone else clear their rods and reels- place safely up top or on the bow out f the way as the fight has just begun. We need a clear safe deck to possible make many laps around the boat and chase down this monster fish. Everyone needs to breath and be calm- slow and patient wins the race here. I do mean race as here comes the science part from decades of fighting the big girls. It’s no shame to take turns on these animals- you’re using different muscles and they PULL. PLEASE listen to the crew- adrenalin is rushing and your ears tent to not work like normal. I am not yelling I am coaching, remember that. Big Shark Fishing Science lesson 101- we should see the fish at the 30-40 minute point (are we harvesting then Probably NOT if she is a big gal. She is green and we need her wore out to safely harvest. Round 2 we will see her near at the 1 hour point- she is not tired yet but both you and here know it has been a fight- she is fighting for her life. We may or may not get our chance her. By now we have a game plan and have went over everyone’s job “YES” you all have jobs. May just gaff or we may shoot her depending on situation. We need to be careful not everyone is on the same side of the boat too as weight will shift. Rod man- she is not caught until tail and head ropes are on her- she can rip out a gaff and run away again. Round 3 Well is we are here it is the 1 andhalf hour point- this is typically where we get best gaff shots. If we miss here well you guessed it. Round 4- now we are 2 hours plus into this fight. You all have did amazing but this is a BIG Fish. Our tackle is getting more fatigued than you all are. Our best plans have failed us. Captain Scott hate’s losing and now is where we change the game and see if losing drag and letting her run brings her to the surface where we quickly chase down the line and get her near, Or we cut figure 8’s instead of circles. We may lose her now but we have to take chances here- Best of Luck and hope to see you with her on the gaff but if not it was an adventure sometimes it is not meant to be. JOBS- we need several of you to film and take photos as you rotate fighting her. Boat side we need a couple of strong guys to put on supplied gaffs and be ready to gaff and hold the big girl boats side if harvesting. Once we have multiple gaffs in her someone will hand us the tail ropes we put on the captains seats. We will rope off- take some photos- high 5”s and drink some water. Boating- 1st we will dispatch and gut her in the water- sharks stomach make up 1/3 the weight. We will lift in or rig a block and tackle. Now here is the important thing again we need some weight on the other side of the boat again to counter balance her out because we are about to add 150-400 pounds of extra guest. In the boat- sharks can bite hours after being caught- stay away from the business end and the tail also. Captain Scott and Dusty have a few fish slap tail slap scars and no one wants stiches form the biting end. We will figure out back landside some cool photos and angles for your photos, we can tube the meat out for your dinner fair- sharks pee through their skins so belly meat is not harvested. We offer jaw cleaning for additional price also (NOT as easy as you think) RELEASING- now boat side this is not as easy as you think either unless she breaks off. We have long de-hookers we try to use first and then if need be cut the leader End Game- We had an amazing Safari Adventure and everyone had a great time and all is safe. We call it fishing and not catching so we made memories and if your not eating bull shark pork chops we will get her on the next adventure. “Shark’n” it is what we do “Shark’n” See you in the Blue Water- Captain Scott and the Nauti Girl Crew www.nautigirlcharters.com
